Pirates bronzed at Eastlake tourney

EASTLAKE, Ohio – Five Pirates earned steps among the top three on the podium, as Rocky River registered a third-place finish in Saturday’s John Matteucci Memorial Classic hosted by Eastlake North High School. [results]

Wrestling at 106 pounds, senior Matt Williams went 5-0 with five pins to earn the top step on the podium. Three of Williams’ five wins by fall were of the lightning-fast version, earned in under 40 seconds. Sophomore Omar Abazied won the title at 132; Abazied went 4-0 with four wins by fall.

Junior Jacob Bergin logged a runner-up finish at 138; Bergin went 4-1 with three pins and a tech fall. Mohammed Salti (2-2 at 126) and Obaida Abazied (2-2 at 152) each placed third.

As a team, the Pirates rolled up 147.5 points, a total bested only by North (236) and Liberty (175) in a field of 12 teams.

Notable among River’s other performances Saturday was that of junior grappler Ryan Maloney. Maloney went 3-2 in placing fourth in a talented bracket at 120 pounds. He earned a major, a tech fall and a pin.
