Bucs bash Beaumont in bracket battle

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The Pirates advanced in DII Northeast District Tournament play, as Rocky River defeated the Beaumont Blue Streaks, 5-0, on Thursday evening.

Rocky River (15-0-2) pulled off the commanding win with three goals in the opening half and two in the second. The postseason victory extends the Pirates' unbeaten streak, which now stands at 17 games. River will have an opportunity to extend that streak one click further along in the district bracket; that match -- against the winner of Thursday's battle between St. Vincent-St. Mary and Holy Name -- will be held at Rocky River Stadium on Monday.

On Thursday night against Beaumont (4-13), the third-ranked (DII Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association) Pirates opened the game with 15 minutes of consistent possession time but connections were perhaps a beat slow or a couple degrees off target. River broke through with a nifty Ava Patti goal in the 16th minute. A spin move 15 yards out put the Pirate freshman in position to whip a shot past the Blue Streak 'keeper and into the net. Rocky River's next goal also involved Patti, and it came one minute later.

In the 17th minute, Patti settled down a tipped pass from Mackenzie Russell and then threaded a pass to Cara McKenna who banged home her fourth goal of the season. The Pirates added one more goal -- an Ava Patti marker in the 25th minute -- before heading into the second half.

Sophia Murray's fourth of the season -- on a well-placed 15-yarder in the 42nd minute -- upped the River lead to 4-0. Rayna Kishna cleaned up loose change on the doorstep in the 78th minute to close out the scoring for the match.

Rocky River's patient, persistent, ball-control approach netted a 5-10 River-sided shot count for the night. The shutout marked the Pirates' 13th of the season and the 25th in the career for senior netminder Sabrina Rick.

Ava Patti's goals marked her team-leading 16th and 17th of the season.


CANNON FIRE ...

SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREAK: With 17 straight matches without a loss, the 2020 Pirates eclipse a 16-game streak posted by the 2010 team. The 2020 streak is now the second-longest in program history (23 -- 2013). ... Thursday's win ran River's home record to 10-0-1. The Detroit Road Buccaneers are 14-0-1 over their last 15 games at home.
