Lightning strikes twice in River win over Parma

RR Baseball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The Pirates rode a big pitching effort by senior Tommy Capka and a big six-run fifth inning to a 10-3 Great Lakes Conference win over Parma on Thursday.

Capka started for the Sons of Blackbeard and went five innings, striking out nine batters. Sophomore Hudson Wissman pitched the sixth and seventh.

Rocky River took a 3-0 lead into the home half of the third inning when the game was halted by a 30-minute lightning delay. After the delay, it was the River offense providing the electricity at the Bus Yard.

RBI singles by freshmen Thomas Rossi and Nathan Mitchell keyed a six-run bottom of the fifth for the Pirates. The Maroon & White circuited the bags on those hits, a pair of hit batsmen, and a two-run error by the Redmen defense.

With a punch-out and a nifty 1-2-3 double play, Wissman got the Pirates out of a jam in the Parma sixth, and River cruised to the eventual win by a touchdown.

Rocky River is scheduled to play a non-conference game at Ashtabula Lakeside on Saturday.
