Top Dogs at Kensington

Kensington Intermediate School has a whole pack of Top Dogs this year. Five fifth-grade students were winners of Cuyahoga County Fiscal Office Dog License Department’s “Top Dog" essay contest. The students are Megan Nock, Adam Cain, Sam Buehrle, Taylor Byall, and Carl Wright. Each received a certificate, trophy, and a treat bag. Kensington had an especially impressive showing, taking fully fifty percent of the 10 winning slots.

The Department’s annual contest is open to first through fifth graders in Cuyahoga County. They are challenged to write a 50-word essay about why their dog should be chosen Top Dog in Cuyahoga County (non-dog owners are invited to write about a friend’s or neighbor’s dog). The overall winner receives dog license #1 for his or her dog (the first one issued in the year).

Teacher Monica Quigley, who coordinated the students’ submissions, is very pleased with the results. “I am so proud of the students that won the "Top Dog" writing contest,” she says. “This was a great opportunity for the students to prove themselves in terms of their writing ability. The experience lets them know that what they write and have to say matters."
