6TH GRADE NEWEST NOTES (Beyond 2016):...STATES OF MATTER

Properties and States of Matter Vocabulary

  1. Physical Property - a characteristic of a substance that can be observed and measured without changing the identity of the substance.

  1. Physical Change - when a substance’s physical properties change but it is still the same substance

  1. Chemical Property - a substance’s ability to change into a new substance with different properties.

  1. Chemical Change - reaction occurs and a new substance is formed and energy is given off or absorbed.

  1. Phase Change - a physical change that results in a substance changing from one state of matter into another.

  1. Solid - state of matter that has a fixed volume and shape.

  1. Liquid - state of matter that has a fixed volume but it adapts to the shape of the container.

  1. Gas - state of matter that has no fixed shape or volume.

  1. Plasma - state of matter that contains particles that are electrically charged.

  1. Freezing - when matter changes from a liquid to a solid

  1. Melting - when matter changes from a solid to a liquid

  1. Condensation - when matter changes from a gas to a liquid

  1. Evaporation - when matter changes from a liquid to a gas

  1. Boiling - a rapid change from a liquid to a gas that occurs throughout the entire liquid and not just at the surface.

  1. Sublimation - when matter changes from a solid to a gas

  1. Deposition- when matter changes from a gas to a solid

  1. Viscosity - how much a liquid resists flowing or moving
