River rocks Vikings, 15-0, in opener

RR Softball

CLEVELAND (March 25, 2024) -- River pitched and walked its way to a 15-0 rout in its season opener Monday. With two pitchers combining on a four-frame no-hitter and their circle counterparts for the home team walking 17 batters, Rocky River clobbered Villa Angela-St. Joseph to get the 2024 season underway.

Freshman Reagan Kane pitched a near-perfect three innings in her prep debut. The right-hander struck out nine Vikings including six in two immaculate innings (three strikeouts on nine pitches). Kane hit one batter, in the bottom of the second inning, and that would prove to be just one of three VASJ batters to reach base in the mutually-agreed-upon shortened (four-inning) contest on a sunny, breezy afternoon.

Kane, who threw 27-of-40 pitches for strikes, was spelled by left-hander Ava DeMooy in the fourth. DeMooy fanned three. She also hit a batter and issued a base on balls, but she preserved the no-hitter.

The Pirate offense was mostly churned out four wide ones at a time. Rocky River (1-0) plated four funs in the first inning and eight in the second, and the rout was on. Sophomore Maggie Heigle singled and drew three walks. Five River batters were issued multiple walks in the game.

The Pirates had six hits in the contest. All were singles, save for a triple by Lillian Sereika in the second. Sereika also earned two free passes on the day.

With Sienna DeMooy (two stolen bases) and Elizabeth Smalley (2 SB) leading the way, the Buccaneers swiped seven bags.
