Pirates blitz Blazers, push record to 7-0 with 14-5 road conquest

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (April 11, 2024) -- Rocky River kept its season-opening win streak alive in a Thursday road test, as the Pirates prevailed 14-5 at Hathaway Brown.

Senior attacker Kaitlyn Byrne and junior midfielder Grace DeWitt combined for nine goals in a game that was tight early but saw the Pirates (7-0) break free of the the Blazers with a 6-0 run beginning late in the first quarter. Hathaway Brown tallied the final goal of the first half, and the two sides went into halftime with the visiting Raiders leading 9-4. River would go on to outscore the Blazers 5-1 in the second half.

Two-thirds of the Pirates' key 6-0 run came out of the crosses of Byrne and DeWitt. Byrne would finish the game with four goals and an assist. DeWitt had five goals and has now scored 14 times over Rocky River's last four games.

The other Pirate scorers at HB were Reagan Connelly (2G), Elle Mocho (1G, 1A), Alexis Tisler (1G, 1A), and Daisy Thompson (1G). Addie Tisler registered two assists.

The Blazers' five goals marked the most by a River foe since March 19 (7 by Bay). The Double-R has now beaten HB in four straight games. Since 2011, the Pirates lead the series 6-3.

Rocky River's next game is slated for Tuesday, when the Pirates welcome Northern Ohio Lacrosse League foe Avon to the Detroit Road Lacrosse Grounds for a 7 p.m. game. Tuesday's contest against the Eagles will mark Senior Night for the Striped Buccaneers.
