Panthers pounce, defeat River 3-0

RR Volleyball

ELYRIA, Ohio (Oct. 12, 2023) -- Rocky River dropped its regular-season finale, as the Pirates fell to the Elyria Catholic Panthers 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) in Thursday Great Lakes Conference West Division action.

The Maroon & White were held to a season-low .045 attack percentage as they lost their second match this season to Elyria (3-1 Sept. 19). Rocky River was shut out 3-0 by Bay Tuesday; this week marks the first time since Aug. 26-27, 2019, that the Pirates have been blanked 3-0 in two straight matches. River did clean up some recent issues in the service department; the Buccaneers were tagged with just one service error. But the team was undone by 24 hitting and 31 dig errors.

Individually, Rocky River (13-9, 3-5 GLC West) was led by Lyniah Campbell-Cass (11 kills), Katelyn Heavey (5K, eight digs), Kylie Spies (16 assists, two aces, 10D), and Maggie Pfahl (21D).

The Pirates have a first-round bye in the Northeast 5 District bracket in the upcoming DI Buckeye State tournament. On Oct. 17, River will host either No. 16 Strongsville or No. 17 Amherst Steele.
