ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Oct. 7, 2023) -- Rocky River hosted a non-conference quad-match Saturday, and the Pirates went 1-2 across their three contests. The Pirates lost to Chardon 2-0 (25-23, 27-25), lost to Brecksville 2-0 (27-25, 25-16), and defeated North Ridgeville 2-0 (25-17, 25-19).
River hit .186, .103, and .133 over those matches, respectively. The Chardon match was a hard-fought tussle but one that saw the Pirates undone by nine service errors. The Pirates tagged with 23 dig errors in the Brecksville tilt. Against North Ridgeville, the Buccaneers banged out nine aces while only committing nine miscues on the back line.
Individually, Rocky River (13-7) was paced by Ella Brokaw (19 kills, .368 attack percentage), Lyniah Campbell-Cass (14K), Maggie Pfahl (40 digs), and Taylor Spies (23 assists, four aces, 10D). Brokaw filed a Boeing .727 percentage in the Chardon match.
The Pirates will return to Great Lakes Conference West Division play Tuesday when they host the Bay Rockets.

PFAHL SPORTS MOMENT: Senior libero Maggie Pfahl registered her 40 digs against just seven errors Saturday. Pfahl's 39th dig of the day marked the 1,000th of her career. The back-line standout has averaged 4.7 digs per set over her career and a robust 5.9 digs per set this season.
BUCKEYE STATE BRACKETS: Rocky River has been awarded the No. 13 seed in the DI Region 2 in the upcoming OHSAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament. The Pirates have a first-round bye in the
Northeast 5 District bracket. On Oct. 17, River will host either No. 16 Strongsville or No. 17 Amherst Steele. The single-elimination state tournament is comprised of four regions (four districts each) and runs through Nov. 11. The semifinal and title matches in each of four divisions will be held at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Nov. 9-11.
