Rockets sink Pirates 3-0

RR Volleyball

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (Sept. 13, 2023) -- Rocky River was dealt its first setback of the season Wednesday, as the Pirates fell 3-0 at Bay. The Rockets prevailed by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.

The contest marked River's first 3-0 loss in regular-season action since Oct. 5, 2021 (3-0 at Westlake).

Bay out-hit Rocky River .169 to .056. The latter figure marked the Pirates' lowest attack percentage since Oct. 1 (-.038 vs. Kenston). The home side got 13 kills from sophomore Olivia Miller and four solo blocks from senior Laura Fuehrer. Overall, Bay managed nine blocks to River's three.

Samantha Young paced the Pirates with 13 kills and 14 digs. Kylie Spies added 18 assists and 11 digs against just one error. Maggie Pfahl had a season-high 8.3 digs per set (25 total).

"When it came to moments of adversity, we responded well at times tonight," said coach Brittany Hensley. "But we can get better and more consistent in that department."

With Wednesday's loss, the Pirates have now dropped 4-of-5 to the Rockets since 2021.

Rocky River (6-1, 3-1 GLC West) will return to action in a Friday-Saturday invitational tournament hosted by Avon Lake High School.
