Pirates prevail in Name game, conquer Wave 3-0

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio (Aug. 29, 2023) -- Rocky River snapped an eight-match losing streak against Holy Name and remained unbeaten on the season, as the Pirates crashed through the Green Wave 3-0 Tuesday.

River got a big back-line effort and recorded 62 digs against just 17 errors in the 25-13, 25-18, 25-22 victory.

"I've been really proud of our serving and serve receive lately," said coach Brittany Hensley, whose Pirates have faltered in just one set over three matches thus far. "That serve and receive has allowed us to get some nice leads in matches."

On Tuesday, five first-set aces -- including three by sophomore setter Kylie Spies -- helped propel the Pirates to an early advantage. River would go on to finish the evening with 13 aces.

Spies finished the match with three aces, 14 assists, and 10 digs. Spies, Maggie Pfahl (15 digs), and Samantha Young (15 digs) all registered double-digit dig numbers against a frustrated Holy Name (0-3, 0-2 GLC) attack.

Offensively, the Pirates hit .136. They got 10 kills from Young, seven from Katelyn Heavey, and five from Ella Brokaw.

Brokaw had three solo blocks and four total. Ella Duffy filed 13 assists and four digs.

The River triumph marked the program's first over Holy Name since Oct. 25, 2017.

The Pirates (3-0, 2-0) are slated to play the Fairview Warriors Thursday at home.
