Corsairs cruise, topple Rockets in GLC match

Luke Dietrich

AVON, Ohio (Aug. 29, 2023) -- Rocky River remained unbeaten in match play with a 148-167 triumph in a Tuesday Great Lakes Conference battle against the Bay Rockets.

The Pirates authored four rounds in the 30s on the par-36, 3,131-yard inward nine at Sweetbriar Golf Club. The Double-R tied its season-best match score (148 posted at Big Met Golf Course Aug. 16) in a birdie-filled afternoon on the sun-splashed west-side track. River's top-4 scorers had more than a couple near-eagles on the day, they settled for a combined six birdies.

Senior Luke Dietrich led the Pirates (6-0, 6-0 GLC), carding a 1-under 35. Dietrich hit eight greens and filed eight pars and a birdie. Fellow senior Jack Petrus finished 2 strokes behind Dietrich. Petrus leveraged a 2-under stretch from 11-to-15 in registering his best career nine.

Caden Lawrence logged his own 2-under, five-hole stretch (13 through 17) en route to a 38. Jack Hurt carded the same number. They were Rocky River third and fourth scorers.

As a team, Rocky River hit 24-of-72 (33.3%) greens and averaged 15 putts per man.

In what marked the squad's first action since Aug. 21, the River seniors logged a notable accomplishment: over their careers, they are now 4-0 against their rivals to the west.

"We showed some of our depth today with the back end posting some low numbers," said coach David Hendrickson. "It’s always great to see everyone play a solid round, especially after the long layoff with all that rain and the transition back into school."

YOUNG BUCS
: Tuesday's action amounted to a Pillage-of-the-Village sweep, with the Pirate junior varsity taking down their Bay counterparts 169-188. Sophomore Finn Potts (40) and freshman Nolan Toole (41) were the top scorers for the River JV.

ON DECK: The swinging Corsairs, who had events cancelled on Aug. 24 and Aug. 28, will now be off until Sept. 5, when they travel to Columbia Hills Country Club in Columbia Station for a tournament hosted by Midview High School.
