Pirates power past Shoremen

Mack Massad

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 4, 2023) -- Rocky River posted a 9-6 Northern Ohio Lacrosse League win against Avon Lake Tuesday.

Senior midfielder Mack Massad paced the Pirates with four goals and a 14-3 mark on 17 faceoffs during an evening that saw him break Rocky River's program record for ground balls. Wes Bennett and Andrew Lang added two goals each in a contest River led wire-to-wire.

The Pirate defense was sharp, holding a foe to a six goals or less for a sixth time this season. Rocky River (6-1, 5-1 NOLL) outshot the Shoremen 34-19. The Sons of Blackbeard allowed just 11 shot on frame, and senior netminder Carter Smith stopped five of those.

With the victory, the Maroon & White earned a measure of retribution against their NOLL neighbors to the west. The Shoremen sunk the Pirates 8-3 last season (April 12).

Massad, a senior captain, passed Andrew Snow (2017-19) on the first of his 15 ground balls on the night. That scoop marked the 322nd of his career.

The Pirates are now slated to be off until April 15 when they hit the road for a non-conference game at Copley.
