Mustangs ride off with win over River

RR Girls Lacrosse

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (March 30, 2023) -- Rocky River was dealt a regular-season setback for just the third time over the last two seasons, as the Strongsville Mustangs defeated the Pirates 9-5 Thursday.

The Mustangs (5-1, 4-0 Northern Ohio Lacrosse League) battled back from an early 3-1 deficit. Senior Alyssa Glenn and junior Tori Wanat each scored twice in a 5-0, five-minute-and-two-second stretch at the end of the first half. That run wrested away the Double-R's early momentum and sent the visitors into halftime leading 6-3.

Rocky River (4-1, 3-1) got goals by Olivia Konopka (19:47) and Alexis Tisler (13:37) to get within one (6-5) by the midpoint of the second half. But Strongsville closed out the game with three more scores to earn the 9-5 triumph.

Wanat finished with three goals and an assist. Grace DeWitt (3G) and Konopka (1G, 1A) were River's top scorers for the game.

River's loss -- after beating SHS in back-to-back one-goal games (2021-22) -- marks its first in 10 regular-season games (since April 27: 7-6 loss at Chagrin Falls).

The Pirates are scheduled to play a non-conference road game at Walsh Saturday (2:30 p.m.).
