Pirates fall in bracket tussle with Fairview

Coach Jeff Hammond

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (May 11, 2023) -- The Pirates dropped a hard-fought district tournament game Thursday, as they fell to the Fairview Warriors 15-9.

A midgame lead evaporated for Rocky River (8-12), when the Warriors plated a half-dozen runs in the top of the fifth. Fairview forged the six-spot on the strength six hits -- four of the extra-base variety -- and a pair of walks.

The Warriors would get another six runs in the top of the sixth. The Pirates stayed in the battle by getting runs in each inning the rest of the way, but the big inning eluded the home nine, and River was ousted from the tournament.

Colleen Meese and Ava Mae DeMooy provided much of the work in the circle for the Pirates who now have a team ERA of 9.55. Three River errors aided the Fairview effort. The Buccaneers have now had 59 errors turn into 69 unearned runs this season.

Rocky River's offense Thursday was a station-to-station one. The Pirates logged 17 walks (as did the Warriors), and they swiped seven bases. Sienna DeMooy went 1-for-3, with two walks and two stolen bases.

River will close out its 2023 campaign with a pair of post-postseason games. The Pirates are scheduled to host Lutheran West Friday and then travel to Parma Saturday.
