Walking the plank: selective Pirates earn home win on Senior Day

RR Softball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (May 8, 2023) -- Rocky River plated 15 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Hathaway Brown Blazers 16-4 Monday. In a game decided in run-rule fashion over five innings, senior Colleen Meese and freshman Rylie Quaiser combined on the Pirates' first no-hitter since 2019.

Meese worked around four hit batters and a walk, allowing two runs (one earned) in four innings. River's lone honoree on its Senior Day struck out three batters. At the plate, she helped her own cause with an RBI walk and an RBI ground-out.

Rocky River (7-11) came to bat in the bottom of the fourth trailing 2-1. Fifteen batters later, River had collected four hits in the inning but no Pirates had been retired. In a marathon frame, the Maroon & White dented home 15 times on eight walks, four hit batsmen, three singles, a double (Quaiser), a triple (Benjamin), and a Blazer error. Zoe Satayathum reached base three times in the inning (HBP, 2 BB).

Quaiser came on to pitch the fifth and get River to the finish line in the team's. She allowed two unearned runs while fanning two. The five no-hit frames marked Rocky River's first no-hitter since March 24, 2018 (Marissa Smiley-Megan McBride-Lexi Aguilar: five innings vs. Lutheran West).

Rocky River out-hit Hathaway Brown 6-0. Sienna DeMooy and Lillian Sereika each had a hit and two walks. The Pirates' 16 runs marked their most since April 15 (20 vs. Chagrin Falls).

The Raiders are slated to play at Lorain Wednesday.
