Streak snapped: River drops first game this spring in 9-6 test at Kilbourne

RR Girls Lacrosse

WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- Rocky River had its season-opening, seven-game win streak snapped Saturday. A River squad that had yielded all of eight goals combined over its last for games yielded nine to a talented Worthington Kilbourne squad in a 9-6 loss.

In a matinee tilt at Ron Hopper Memorial Stadium, the Pirates and Wolves jousted in a near-even first half. With sophomore Kaitlyn Byrne netting a pair of goal, the Striped Buccaneers went into halftime leading 4-3. But Kilbourne tipped the momentum scale to their side by scoring the first three goals of the second stanza.

The Pirates (7-1) got within one (6-5) when sophomore Alexis Tisler scored her second goal of the contest at the 16:34-mark of the second. But the Wolves countered with a key goal 67 seconds later, and they would lead by a multi-goal margin the rest of the way.

River's six goals marked a single-game low this season. Over their seven consecutive victories -- which included a Friday night win at Granville in the front end of a two-day Columbus trip -- the Pirates outscored opponents 98-22.

The Maroon & White will  return to conference play Tuesday when the Pirates welcome Northern Ohio Lacrosse League foe Avon Lake to Rocky River Stadium (7 p.m. start time).
