River clocks overtime win over Columbus St. Francis

RR Girls Lacrosse

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Rocky River rallied from a 5-3 halftime deficit to earn a 7-6 victory over Columbus St. Francis Saturday.

Playing their third straight one-goal game, the Pirates (11-2) defeated the Stallions in overtime. River allowed the visitors just one goal over the final 28 minutes. In the second half, the Double-R ran off three straight goals (Olivia Konopka, Mackenzie Russell, Grace DeWitt) to take a 6-5 lead with 6:03 remaining. St. Francis scored at 3:48 to send the game into overtime, and then -- at the 1:52-mark in overtime -- DeWitt planted her second of the contest for the game winner.

The Pirates outshot the Stallions 18-9. Russell (two goals) and Konopka (2G) joined DeWitt in scoring multiple goals in the taut battle at Rocky River Stadium. DeWitt and Kalyn Scalabrino were each credited with two caused turnovers. Hannah Burgess stopped 3-of-9 shots on goal.

River's 7-6 win marked a bounce-back after a loss by the same score to Chagrin Falls on Wednesday.

The Pirates are slated to return to action Monday with a 7 p.m. home game against Westlake. The Northern Ohio Lacrosse League tilt between the Pirates and Demons will mark Senior Night for the Rocky River program.
