Big Six and a big sixth: River rips Redmen 9-1

RR Softball Seniors

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- A pitcher's duel turned into a rout when Rocky River plated nine runs in the bottom of the sixth on Thursday. A 0-0 score through five-and-a-half finished as a 9-1 Pirate victory over Parma in the Great Lakes Conference crossover test at Pirate Field.

In a game that marked Senior Day for the River program, senior hurler Katie Mommers went the distance, allowing just one unearned run while striking out 10 batters. Senior Lindsay Hartman smacked a grand slam in her second at-bat of the nine-run sixth. The Pirates culled together four hits, five walks, and a hit batter in putting together their conga line around the bases. Hartman singled in the inning after fellow senior Kelsey Murphy had led off the frame with a base on balls. Both would come around to score and both would bat again in the marathon stanza. Hartman's next plate-appearance resulted in a grand slam to left field.

After dueling for five innings with Parma's Abbey Hackney, Mommers closed out the win with relative ease. She kept the Redmen hitless in three of the game's last four innings.

The Pirates (8-10) were outhit 5-4 for the game but made the most of 11 walks.

And on this day, they also made the most of the class of 2022.
