River courts low scores, takes the fifth at Prestwick

UNIONTOWN, Ohio (Aug. 22, 2022) -- The Pirates returned to action Monday and posted a fine fifth-place finish at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Green High School. Rocky River notched a team score of 319, a total topped by just four other squads in a field of 22.

Luke Dietrich (36-38--74), Nick Tianello (35-40--75), Owen Toole (42-39--81), and Wes Bennett (45-44--89) were River's scoring four. The event was contested over a 6,767-yard, par-72 layout at Prestwick Country Club.

Dietrich's card included two birdies and 12 pars. He has a 74.6 stroke average since Aug. 15 and a 76.0 on the season.

Tianello's day included a tap-in eagle on the 479-yard, par-5 sixth after leaving his second shot in the shadow of the cup. The junior hit 8-of-14 fairways and 11 greens in regulation in a round that included 13 pars. His 75.8 season average leads the team.

As a team, River hit 42.9% of its fairways and 51.4% of its greens. The Pirates averaged 34 putts per man.

Stow fired a 309 to win the tournament. Avon tallied a 315 to finish as runner-up.

Rocky River has played in six tournaments this fall. The Swinging Corsairs have logged first-division (top-half) finishes in five of those events.
