Rockets rally, earn season split with Pirates

RR Volleyball

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (Sept. 27, 2022) -- Rocky River dropped a 3-2 (13-25,25-14,25-22,22-25,7-15) decision at Bay in Great Lakes Conference West Division action Tuesday.

The Pirates (9-2, 5-2 GLC West) got 30 kills from Samantha Young but were held to a .141 on the attack after hitting .186 in defeating Bay 3-1 earlier this season (Sept. 8). Despite the short 15-point fifth set on Tuesday, Rocky River averaged 7.2 digging errors per set -- and that from a team that averaged just 5.8 such miscues per set in winning its previous three matches.

"We just need to make some minor adjustments and learn how to finish in high pressure situations," said coach Brittany Morris. "We have to learn from this and move forward."

Young's performance against the Rockets (12-3, 5-2) also included three service aces and 16 digs. The Pirate junior hit .256 Tuesday and has now logged 66 kills over the team's last three matches.

Ella Duffy registered 22 assists and 17 digs. Ella Brokaw added eight kills and three aces.

Bay, which has now won four straight matches, swatted its way to a .182 average Tuesday. The Rockets had 15 blocks. Laura Fuehrer had 12 kills and seven blocks on the evening. Sophie Thomas added 13 kills, three aces, and three blocks.

The Pirates will look to get back to their winning ways Thursday when they host Fairview.
