ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2022) -- News and notes after Rocky River's 23-21 loss to Elyria Catholic on Sept. 16 and heading into the Pirates' Friday game versus Bay ...

GAME 5: Rocky River (1-4, 0-1 Great Lakes Conference West) lost to the Elyria Catholic Panthers, who scored a go-ahead field goal with 36 seconds left to prevail 23-21. The Pirates scored the game's first two touchdowns (senior Johnny Bebie on a 13-yard run, junior Julian Patti on a 1-yard run) and looked to be on their way to grinding out a methodical 14-0 lead by halftime. But EC scored a late second-quarter TD and then got a an early-third scoop-and-score to knot the game at 14-14. After the Panthers (4-1, 1-0) got another score to take a 20-14 lead, the Pirates battled back. An 87-yard pass from Patti to senior wide receiver Mack Massad -- and a subsequent extra point -- vaulted River to a 21-20 lead with 4:23 remaining in the fourth. Elyria Catholic then leveraged decent field position and made its way to the Rocky River 7-yard line. The Panthers took the lead -- and the game -- on a 24-yard Nicholas Phillips field goal.

The kick -- the longest field goal in River history -- capped off a comeback from a 20-11 deficit. The Pirates' all-time leading scorer is Tommy Bebie, who tallied 272 points from 2018-21. ... With his extra point, Massad moved past Matt Goepfert (2014-15) for the all-time Rocky River mark in that category. Massad now has 78. ... Massad also logged his seventh punt of the season inside the opponents' 20-yard line, Rocky River's single-season record is 11 such kicks, recorded by Patrick Green in 2017. All the scoring in the came occurred before halftime. The Buccaneers cranked out 354 yards of offense over the first two quarters -- every one of them was on the ground. River had six possessions in the opening half -- every one of them resulted in a touchdown. The final 31-point margin of victory marked the Pirates' largest margin of victory against their rivals since Oct. 12, 2007 (50 points in a 56-6 contest).
