Pirates close out regular season with solid tourney at Fox Creek

RR Boys Golf

LORAIN, Ohio (Sept. 29, 2022) -- The Swinging Corsairs closed out their regular season with a solid performance in Thursday's Amherst Comet Classic at Fox Creek Golf Club. Rocky River carded a four-man score of 331 and took third place in the event.

On an overcast, chilly fall afternoon, Luke Dietrich continued his late-season assault by logging a runner-up finish in a field of some 70 players. Dietrich -- a first-team all-Great Lakes Conference performer -- birdied three holes in his round and fired a 37-37--74 on the 6,029-yard, par-71 layout at Fox Creek. He led River in greens in regulation (10) and putts (30) in lowering his September scoring average to 75.1 (76.0 stroke average for the season).

Only Westlake's Sion Park (72) managed a lower score in the tournament hosted by Amherst Steele High School. Westlake and St. Edward carded team scores of 316; the Demons won the 12-team tournament on a fifth-man tie-breaker.

Rocky River's other scoring players Thursday were Nick Tianello (41-43--84), Owen Toole (41-45--86), and Jack Hurt (40-47--87).

As a team, the Pirates hit 44.2% (23) of 52 fairways and 41.7% of their greens in regulation while averaging 33.8 putts per man.

With the third-place finish, the Corsairs have now earned first (Sept. 6), second (Sept. 19), second (Sept. 26), and third in their last four tournaments.

And River timing with that type of play is good. On Monday, the part of the season where its play well or go home begins. The Pirates will play in a sectional tournament at Grey Hawk Golf Club Monday. Only the top four teams in that event will move on further in Buckeye State postseason play.
