Double-R duo competes in district tourney

Nick Tianello, Luke Dietrich

HINCKLEY, Ohio -- A pair of par-making Pirates competed in Monday's DI Northeast Ohio District Tournament held at Pine Hills Golf Club Monday. Nick Tianello fired a 37-43--80 at the challenging, 6,708-yard, par-71 track. Luke Dietrich carded a 42-40--82. The Rocky River sophomores missed the cut in an attempt to qualify for the DI Ohio Championship Tournament, thus ending the season for Double-R Boys' Golf. [results]

Both players started on the inward nine. Tianello struggled in putting over his first nine, but he rallied to card a 1-over 37 on his second nine. Tianello birdied the 310-yard, par-4 third hole as part of his steady finish.

Dietrich clocked a birdie-3 on the par-4 first.

Tianello and Dietrich placed T-48th and T-66th, respectively, in a field of 120 golfers battling on a warm, breezy day in Hinckley. The top four teams (St. Ignatius, Hoban, Green, Walsh) and top four individual scores not on a qualifying team (Ryan Sam-Boardman, Chris Bridge-University, Nolan King-Avon, Max Devins-Aurora) earned berths in the state tournament which will be held at Oct. 22-23 at Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Northeast District medalist was Hoban's Solomon Petrie, who posted a 3-under 68.
