Pirates fall in season finale

RR Softball

ELYRIA, Ohio -- Rocky River closed out its 2021 season with a 9-5 loss at Elyria Catholic Friday.

The Pirates circuited the bags five times in the top of the sixth, but that would mark the lone frame that saw the visitors post a number in the seven-inning Great Lakes Conference affair. With more than a few runs of the unearned variety and a few more aided by walks and wildness, the host Panthers had already built a 9-0 lead by the time River got on the scoreboard.

Seniors Maire Kelly (2-for-4) and Lexi Aguilar (2-for-4) each closed out their fine careers with two-hit games. Katie Mommers went 2-for-3 and logged River's only extra-base hit (double) in a game that saw the home side outhit the visitors, 9-7. Mommers also pitched in the contest; she combined with Maggie Hill and Colleen Meese in issuing the final circle twirls of the season.

The victory over the Pirates (16-12) sealed a two-game season sweep for the Panthers who downed the Double-R, 17-5, in Rocky River on May 11.
