Bucks top Pirates, 11-1

RR Softball

MEDINA, Ohio -- Rocky River was dealt an 11-1 run-rule loss by the Buckeye Bucks on Monday.

The host Bucks leveraged seven hits -- including two doubles and a home run -- and five walks in the regular season game between Great Lakes Conference foes. The victory completed a two-game season sweep for the Bucks, who downed the Pirates, 14-0, in Rocky River on May 6.

The Pirates (15-10) scored their lone run in the top of the first, getting a Maire Kelly single and a Katie Mommers triple but coming up short in two more RBI situations. River would go 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position for the game. The Bucks vaulted into the lead with a four-spot in their half of the first. Buckeye had two doubles and two hit batters in that first inning.

More hits, walks, and hit batsmen were compounded with a couple Pirate errors in a four-run bottom of the second. The Bucks would get two more in the third and one in the fifth, while holding Rocky River scoreless the rest of the way.

Buckeye pitching racked up six strikeouts against no walks, and the Bucks outhit the Pirates, 7-4.

Kelly went 2-for-3 in cranking out half of River's hit production. Kelsey Murphy went 0-for-2 in having a nine-game hit streak snapped. Murphy batted .774 (24-of-31) over the streak. Colleen Meese pitched for Rocky River.

On Tuesday, the Pirates will continue play in the LaGrange District brackets in the DII Ohio Softball Tournament. Tuesday's district semifinal has Rocky River taking on Padua at 5 p.m. The game will be held at LaGrange Community Park in LaGrange, Ohio.
