Pirates sink Rockets in valley battle

RR Boys' Golf

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- Rocky River remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Conference play with a hard-fought 164-168 victory over Bay Thursday.

The Pirates (5-1, 5-0 GLC) were paced by sophomore Lucas Dietrich, who fired a 3-over 39 on the 3,229-yard, par-36 front nine at Big Met Golf Club. River's four-stroke win was its closest of the season.

Backing Dietrich's 39 on the team sheet were Owen Toole (41) and a pair of 42s (Nick Tianello, Robby Lang, Wes Bennett). Dietrich (4 on the par-5 seventh) and Toole (4 on the par-5 fifth) bolstered their scores with birdies on what was a scorcher along the banks of the Rocky River.

"We didn't have our best stuff today," said head coach David Hendrickson, "but we grinded out a win against our rivals, and that always feels good to win."

Hendrickson's River Raiders are slated to return to action Monday at the Lake High School-hosted Blue Streak Invitational at Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville, Ohio.
