Streak smarts: winning ways continue with home win over Redmen

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Pirate Volleyball earned its fifth consecutive win Tuesday evening, as Rocky River defeated Parma, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-9), in Great Lakes Conference action at Rocky River Gymnasium.

The victory for the Maroon & White continues a streak which began on Sept. 3. It’s a streak that now includes five matches, all of the GLC variety. The Pirates (8-3, 8-1 GLC) collected 15 aces and registered an attack percentage of .275 in Tuesday’s tilt at the Corner of Wagar & Detroit.

The list of contributors to River’s latest conquest is one that runs deep. The Pirates got multiple kills from five different players and multiple aces from four. Sophomore hitter Paige Waite was a member of both groups. Waite swatted her way to a team-high nine kills and a .368 average, while serving her way to a pair of aces. She is now hitting .350 over River’s last four matches.

Amanda Franz led the Pirate ace parade. Franz tied her season-high with four against the Redmen. She also had eight digs in the contest. Emma Liszeski and Taylor Spies added three aces each. Spies (13) and Emily Slyman (nine) combined to collect 22 assists on the night.

Emily Stanciu carded eight kills, three digs and a block.

River’s 4.7 aces per set marked the team’s most in a match since Aug. 24. With 14 aces total on Tuesday, the Pirates have now hit double figures in that category five times in 2019.

Tuesday’s victory marks a Rocky River season sweep of Parma. The Pirates defeated the Redmen, 3-0, in Parma on Aug. 22.

The shutout marked River’s fourth of the season and its first since Aug. 24.

 

CANNON FIRE … 

FOURS TO BE RECKONED WITH: Freshman Madie Shoaf had a solo block and three block assists on Tuesday. She has now logged four blocks in a match five times this season. … Shoaf has stifled a team-high 28 shots on the season (12 solo, 16 assists). She has recorded at least one block in every match.

(GR)EIGHT STREAK: With Tuesday’s win, Rocky River has now defeated Parma eight straight times. The Redmen downed River in a pair of five-game matches in 2015. The Pirates have won eight straight since, dropping just one game along the way.
