Back in the swing of things

HINCKLEY, Ohio – Rocky River Boys’ Golf opened its 2019 season with a sixth-place finish at the Brunswick Tee-Off Classic on Monday.

Sophomore Carlo Fricano led the River effort with a 78. The Pirates fired a four-man team score of 336 on what was a beautiful day under azure blue skies at Pine Hills Golf Club.

“This was a nice start to the season, and I definitely saw a lot of good things from our guys,” said Head Coach David Hendrickson whose Pirates were Great Lakes Conference champions – for a fourth consecutive year – last fall. “We’ve got some things to work on for sure, but I’m happy with our overall performance.”

That performance was spearheaded by Fricano, whose round included birdies on each side of the par-71, 6,600-yard layout. Backing up Fricano’s sub-80 scorecard were Will Bennett (84), Mac Milenius (85), Aidan McDonald (89) and Ethan Mylett (89). Milenius carded a pair of birdies as part of his 14-over 85.

Monday’s invitational was hosted by Brunswick High School and included 18 teams. The Walsh Warriors won the event with a team score of 305. Medina placed second with a 309. Walsh’s Ben Cors fired a 2-under 69 to earn medalist honors.

For Rocky River, the Pine Hills event kicked off a busy week. The Pirates are slated to play in tournaments on Tuesday and Wednesday.
