Invaders repelled in league opener

RR Volleyball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Pirates swatted and swept their way to a 3-0 victory in opening Great Lakes Conference play on Tuesday.

Rocky River’s victims were the Invaders of Normandy High School. And the visiting side would give River a close effort all the way, point-by-point and set-by-set. But a youthful Pirate bunch prevailed by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 26-24. Underclassmen keyed the victory.

Rocky River (1-1, 1-0 GLC) got a deep performance on the front line, with six players recording three or more kills in the contest. Sophomore Paige Waite had a team-high nine kills while hitting .350. Freshman Maddie Shoaf hit .333; she had six kills and four total blocks. The Pirates hit .114 as a team.

Sophomore Taylor Spies had an errorless 16 assists in helping guide the River attack.

The Pirates have now defeated the Invaders in nine straight since the two became GLC foes in 2015.
