McDonald leads twin wins in the valley

RR Boys' Golf

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio – Rocky River went low on its rain-soaked home grounds on Tuesday. The Pirates rode consistent, up-and-down-the-roster, par-and-bogey play to twin Great Lakes Conference victories at Big Met Golf Course.

The Pirates carded a four-man score of 161, the team’s best in three Big Met nine-hole matches this season. With that number, River handily turned aside GLC foes Buckeye (213) and Valley Forge (217). The team’s league record is now 11-1.

Junior Matthew McDonald continued his fine play of late by posting a team-best 39 over 3,229 soggy yards of Big Met’s par-36 front nine. McDonald played his final seven holes in 1-over and now has a combined varsity-jv stroke average of 83.7 since Aug. 14.

On Tuesday, McDonald was joined on the score sheet by Ethan Mylett (40), Carlo Fricano (41) and Mac Milenius (41). Like McDonald, Fricano also excelled after a rough start. He triple-bogeyed the first but would eventually play 3-through-9 even par. Fricano’s birdie on the par-5 seventh marked River’s only red number of the afternoon.

The Pirates’ numbers may not have been tinged with much red. But they were plenty low.

CANNON FIRE …

ON DECK: River’s varsity squad will take on the Padua Bruins in Wednesday non-conference action at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Medina, Ohio.

DYNAMIC DUO: Through Tuesday’s action, Rocky River’s leading scorers have been Carlo Fricano (81.9) and Ethan Mylett (82.4).
