River runners succeed in Ashland

RR Girls' Cross Country

ASHLAND, Ohio – Rocky River’s Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams competed in the Ashland Invitational on Saturday. [results: boys | girls]

The River boys’ squad placed sixth in a field of 18 teams. The Pirates registered five top-40 finishes in a field of 336 athletes. Rocky River’s team total of 59 was part of a tightly packed group of teams behind definitive champ Ashland, which tallied 48 points.

Luke Kishna was the Pirates’ top runner – he crossed the wire in 17:04 to place 14th.

Paced by sophomore Samantha Coleman’s third-place finish, the Pirate girls placed fifth in a field of 16 teams. Rocky River’s scoring runners all earned top-50 finishes. 

Coleman’s third-place finish came on a record run. Her time of 19:36.2 marked a personal best. Coleman has now earned top-5 finishes in back-to-back Ashland meets – she carded a fifth-place finish a year ago. On Saturday, the sophomore speedster placed third in a field of 266 runners.

The River girls scored 148 points on Saturday. The top team in the girls’ DI standings was Wadsworth (64). The Grizzlies boasted all top-25finishes among their scoring runners.

Pirate Cross Country will return to action on Sept. 7. River will be competing in the Bruce Lerch Invitational hosted by Brecksville High School.
