River nixed in near-miss of a 'Name game

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio – Rocky River lost to Holy Name, 3-1, in a hard-fought Great Lakes Conference battle on Tuesday night.
 
In a closely played tester with four games decided by four points or less, the host Green Wave won 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22. Rocky River (1-2, 1-2 Great Lakes Conference) gave Holy Name (3-0) a tough fight up front, hitting a respectable .225 on the attack. Senior Austoria Miller (15 kills, .333 hitting percentage) and junior Paige Waite (12, .230) paced the River swat team.
 
Miller also had 12 digs on the night, joining Samantha Young (12), Taylor Spies (13), Emma Liszeski (11), and Emily Slyman (10) in double digits. The Pirates were tagged with 39 dig errors and 18 block errors over the four games. Slyman led the squad in assists, with a season-high 35.
 
Holy Name went a combined 68-13 over the last three seasons (2-17-19). In GLC play, the Green Wave went 39-1 over the same stretch. Their last conference loss came at the hands of the Pirates on Oct. 5, 2017.
 

CANNON FIRE …
YOUNG BUCS: The Pirate freshman team was defeated Tuesday at Holy Name and is now 2-1 on the season. The River JV remained undefeated (3-0) with a victory.
 
BOUNCE-BACK BUCCANEER: Austoria Miller, who registered 158 kills as a junior last season, was tagged with 10 attack errors in River’s 2020 season opener. But the senior swatter has rebounded in a big way. She’s collected 27 kills, hitting a robust .409, in two matches since.
