PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- Rocky River placed 12th in Sunday's Lion Classic at the Devin/von Hagge Course at Quail Hollow Country Club.

The Pirates tallied a four-man score of 341, which placed 12th in a talented field of 19 teams.

"The pin placements were tough today," said Head Coach David Hendrickson of the par-71, 6,343-yard layout designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. "Strokes around the green piled up, but I'm encouraged that we're hitting the ball so well."

Hitting it best and marking the scores to prove it Sunday was Luke Dietrich. The Pirate freshman carded a 9-over 80 and was solid throughout. He logged one birdie (par-4 No. 1) in his round and had an 11-hole stretch (his fourth-through-14th holes) where he was just 2-over. Dietrich lowered his 2020 stroke average to 81.6, which is best on the team through six events.

Also notching counters Sunday were Matt McDonald (86), Hayden Weaver (87), and Will Bennett (88). McDonald's round -- which included one birdie -- was his best 18-hole score of the season. His average this fall is 85.

Sunday's event was hosted by Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School. St. Ignatius fired a 288 to edge Hoban (290) for the title on what was a sunny, breezy day at Quail Hollow.

For Rocky River, the east-side tournament marked the first of three straight days on competition links. The Pirates are slated to play in a tournament on Monday and then in a road match against Brunswick on Tuesday.
