Card sharks: Pirates score links win over Fairview

RR Boys' Golf

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- The Swinging Corsairs were back on the banks of the Rocky River on Tuesday afternoon, and the grounds at Big Met Golf Course suited them. Like that same body of water after heavy rains, River rolled.

With Pirate scorecards coming in 30-something one after another, the Maroon & White defeated Fairview, 152-190, in the Great Lakes Conference match on the course's outward nine. The four horsemen riding River to victory were program veterans Will Bennett (1-over 37), Aidan McDonald (38), Matt McDonald (38) and Hayden Weaver (39), seniors all.

Bennett's fine round was built on the strength of six pars and a near-eagle (the par-5 fifth).

Aidan McDonald birdied both par-5s (No. 5, No. 7) en route to his 38. Twin brother Matt McDonald continued his mastery on the familiar valley track by parring eight straight holes before posting a double-bogey on No. 9. He edged his 2019-20 home-course average closer to the digits he filed Tuesday; McDonald went into the match with a 38.5 average at Big Met.

Weaver rallied for his 39. He opened bogey-bogey-bogey before carding four straight pars and then a deuce on the par-3 eighth. Weaver lowered his season average to 84.3 in the process.

The Pirates (3-1, 2-0 GLC) equaled their four-man score posted in their earlier conference win (Aug. 18 at Big Met). Rocky River is now 90-2 (.978) in 92 all-time GLC matches.
