Circuit sessions get underway at Holy Name

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio – Rocky River dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Conference twin bill in competing at a triple dual at Holy Name High School on Thursday.

In what marked the opening of the GLC slate, the Pirates lost to Buckeye, 71-12, and the host Green Wave, 39-36. Matt Williams and Johnny Bebie earned a couple highlight wins on the night.

Wrestling at 106 pounds, Williams lost his bout against Buckeye. He battled back to earn a second-period pin in his match against Holy Name.

Competing at 160, Bebie lost a hard-fought match against the Bucks. He appeared to be headed toward the same fate against the Green Wave when he found himself down by four points. But the freshman grappler turned the tables on his Holy Name foe, earning a third-period in.

River’s other wins over the two matches were by forfeit. Ergi Sulce took two such wins on the evening.

“Against Buckeye, I though we were flat,” said Head Coach Matt Sycz. “Our fundamentals weren’t there. But we battled back against Holy Name, and now we’ve got things to work on for this Saturday.”

On Saturday, the Pirates will travel to Eastlake, Ohio, for the Joe Matteucci Memorial Classic.
