Matt Williams was River’s lone placer in the double-elimination event hosted by Kenston High School – Williams placed fifth at 106 pounds.
“Matt and Mahdi Salti – who was very tough and aggressive in his bouts – were our top performers,” said Head Coach Matt Sycz.
The Pirates scored 27 team points, good for 33rd
place in the 40-plus-team event. Geneva (156 points) edged Fairfield (152) for
the tournament title.
After receiving a first-round bye at 106, Williams pinned opponents from Chagrin Falls and Madison before losing a 9-1 semifinal bout to the eventual champion at 106, Mason Amodio of Southeast High School. Williams dropped a match in the loser’s bracket, but came back to earn yet another win by fall in the bout for fifth place. River’s 106-pounder has now placed in three tournaments this season.
Salti went 2-2 at 182.
