Back on the mats! Wrestling River Raiders compete in season opening tourney

AVON LAKE, Ohio – Rocky River Wrestling lifted the lid on its 2019-20 season at the Cobos Insurance Classic, which was contested at Avon Lake High School on Friday and Saturday. The Pirates garnered a runner-up and two sixth-place finishes in claiming 13th place in a field of 16 teams. [results]

Senior grappler Matt Williams went 4-1 with three falls in carding a runner-up finish at 106 pounds. The 2019 district qualifier won three straight bouts after losing a hard-fought second-round match-up against Avon Lake’s Nathan Perry.

Sophomore Diego Norena took sixth at 113. Norena started his varsity career in style, winning his first four matches on pins. He finished the weekend 4-3 over seven bouts.

Mahdi Salti went 4-3 with three falls in taking sixth place at 182 pounds. The senior grappler and returning district qualifier didn’t suffer a loss until Saturday’s championship quarterfinals.

Rees Vaughan (two wins at 170), Johnny Bebie (three wins at 160), Ryan Maloney (four wins at 120), Aiden Konet (two wins at 160), Omar Abazied (two wins at 132), and Joey Riedl (two wins at 285) registered solid performances for the Wrestling Raiders. Leading the Matmen from River into battle over the two days was first-year Head Coach Matt Sycz.

Sycz and the Pirates are slated to return to the mat in a Saturday, Dec. 14 dual at Cuyahoga Heights.
