Pirates pillage Parma in GLC sweep

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River swept its 2019-20 home opener against Parma on Wednesday evening with the boys’ squad winning 150-25 and the girls’ team downing the Redmen, 149-33.

The event marked River’s first appearance of the season at the Corner of Wagar & Detroit, and it also served as the programs’ Great Lakes Conference opener.

On the boys’ side, the Pirates (3-0, 1-0 GLC) got 16 points from Drew Helms, 15 from Aiden Morris and 13 each from Garrett Morris, Parker Shaw and Braden Devorace. River took first and second place in each of 12 events, and Pirate depth was on display – 12 different swimmers earned individual gold or silver on the night.

Helms (50-yard freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Aiden Morris (200 individual medley, 200 free) each won two individual events. Helms was also in for a piece of two first-place relays.

For the girls, Rocky River (3-0, 1-0) won 12-of-12 events. No fewer than 15 athletes took first or second in individual events. Peyton Spearry scored a team-high 20 points for the Pirates. Spearry carded two individual wins – eight-pointers each in the 200 and 400 free. She was also in on two first-place relays.

Kate Tlapa highlighted a 13-point night with a victory in the 200 IM. Blair Pichola, Ella Russell and Morgan Schuld garnered 10 points apiece.
