Panthers pounce in GLC win over Pirates

RR Softball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The Pirates logged a four-spot in the bottom of Tuesday's first inning against the visiting Elyria Catholic Panthers. Unfortunately for the River Raiders, it would not be smooth sailing from there on, as Rocky River was outscored by EC, 16-1, the rest of the way in an eventual 17-5 loss to the Panthers.

Rocky River (12-9, 7-6 Great Lakes Conference) pitchers walked nine batters, and with four Pirate errors and 15 Panther hits, Elyria Catholic reached base 28 times in the seven-inning affair at Pirate Field.

With Maire Kelly and Katie Mommers pounding out doubles, the Pirates sent 10 to the plate in their four-run first. When the rally ended, the home nine held a 4-1 lead. But the Panthers got one back in the top of the second and then overtook the Pirates with a three-run top-of-the-fourth. EC would get another three runs in the fifth and nine more in the seventh before River would score run No. 5 on an RBI double by Lexi Aguilar.

Aguilar and Kelsey Murphy each went 2-for-4 for the game.

Tuesday's loss marked Rocky River's third in a row. EC's 17 runs marked the most by a River foe since April 5 (17 by Normandy).
