One up, one down in Thursday home matches

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Rocky River hosted a Great Lakes Conference double-dual on Thursday, and the Pirates went 1-1 on the evening. The Maroon & White defeated Valley Forge, 42-24, and lost to Fairview, 36-22.

Ryan Maloney (120 pounds), Obaida Abazied (145), and Rees Vaughan (195) went 2-0 in the twin matches at Rocky River Gymnasium.

Against Valley Forge's Daniel Lehmann, Maloney was solid throughout, taking a 6-1 lead into the third period and winning by a 7-4 decision. Maloney won by forfeit against Fairview. Abazied won by forfeit against the Patriots. Against Fairview's Cole Karliak, the senior grappler grinded out a 7-4 win in a close bout that was within two most of the way. Vaughan's victories were both by forfeit.

Elsewhere in the score sheet, an impressive win was logged by Connor Scheifferle against Valley Forge (10-5 over Blake Verstine).

Up next for the Pirates is the league tournament: the GLC Championships will be held at Valley Forge on Saturday.
