Avon sinks Pirates in circuit opener

RR Girls' Lacrosse

AVON, Ohio -- Rocky River fell to the Avon Eagles, 16-4, on Tuesday night. A talented Avon squad controlled the draw and was strong on the attack, as the Pirates were defeated in their first road game of the young season.

The Eagles broke loose from a 2-2 tie at 17:55 of the first half and would score the game's next eight goals -- six in the first half and two in the second. Avon outscored River, 8-2, in each half.

The contest at Joe Firment Chevrolet Stadium in Avon marked a first for the Rocky River Girls' Lacrosse program: it was the opening of play in a newly-formed conference. The Pirates are now competing as member of the nine-team Northern Ohio Lacrosse League.

Scoring for the Pirates in Tuesday's league game at Avon were sophomore Olivia Konopka (two goals), senior Allison Kysela, and senior Lauren Solecki. Konopka and Kysela have each scored five goals through River's first two games.

"The girls fought hard and played with hustle," said Head Coach Colleen Hile. "Avon's midfield was a powerful unit, and they really controlled the action."

Rocky River (1-1, 0-1 NOLL) is slated to continue its season Thursday with a home game against Revere. The opening draw in the game between the Pirates and Minutemen is slated for 6 p.m.
