Ranger danger: Pirates fall in hard-fought GLC tilt at Lakewood

RR Softball

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Rocky River dropped a 4-2 pitcher's duel against the Lakewood Rangers on Friday. The Pirates outhit the Rangers, 4-3, but couldn't work around walking 10 Lakewood batters and committing three fielding errors.

The Maroon & White scored their runs in the first and third innings. The host Rangers answered each time: Lakewood tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and one in the third (the Rangers got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth). Strong Ranger pitching kept the Pirates (8-6, 5-3 Great Lakes Conference) off the board in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Jordan Rossen (six innings, four hits allowed, eight strikeouts) and Mia Carrol-Greeves (one inning, no base runners, two strikeouts) were the Rangers' twirlers from the circle. They outdueled Katie Mommers (5-1/3 innings, four runs-three earned, nine strikeouts) and Maggie Hill (2/3-inning, strikeout). The six total runs scored mark the fewest in a River game this season.

Lexi Aguilar (two doubles) and Mommers (single, walk) were the only two Pirates to reach base multiple times. Lakewood pitching held Rocky River to a 1-of-7 mark with runners in scoring position. Prior to Friday's setback, the Pirates had scored 124 runs over their previous eight games.
