Power of the Pen Wins Sweepstakes Trophy at Regionals

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - The Rocky River Middle School Power of the Pen team competed at the regional tournament on March 11 and won the Sweepstakes Trophy for the highest combined point total among 34 schools at the district and regional tournaments.

 

The 7th grade team placed second at regionals, while the 8th grade team finished third. 

 

Seventh grade team members include Abigail Lewis, Sophia McConville, Arina Mollaeian, Mattia Sturman, Mallory Tracey, and Alex Wiggers. Eighth grade team members include Avery Barta, Eliza Foster, Delaney Keaton, Caitlyn Lewis, Rieace Liston-Noble, and Samantha Welsh. 

 

In the seventh grade competition, Tracey earned two Best of Round Awards for her stories “Rain, Rain Go Away” and “Ocean of Darkness.”  Her “Rain, Rain Go Away” piece was selected to be published in the 2023 Book of Winners and earned Tracey the elite Platinum Pen Award.

 

McConville placed sixth at the regional competition, securing a spot in the top-12 seventh grade writers and a spot at the state tournament along with Tracey on May 18-19 at Ashland University. In addition, eighth graders Foster, Keaton and Liston-Noble will join McConville and Tracey at the state tournament.


Power of the Pen is the leading interscholastic program in written expression for 7th and 8th graders in Ohio.  The organization’s mission is to empower young people to find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own by engaging students in interscholastic writing tournaments and providing a platform for publication.
