RR Wrestling
ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Feb. 24, 2023) -- Rocky River heads into its postseason Saturday. The Wrestling Raiders will be on sectional bracket mats in Painesville (Harvey High School) looking to qualify for a Northeast Ohio district tournament March 3-4. Catching up with River's mat men over the last few weeks:

On Jan. 26, Rocky River hosted a Great Lakes Conference double-dual. The Pirates competed against Elyria Catholic, winning 48-18, and Westlake, losing 45-18. On the mat, senior heavyweight Ali Karar went 2-0 with two wins by fall. Fellow senior Nate Maloney went 1-0 with a pin at 138 pounds. And senior Aidan Konet went 2-0 with a pin and a medical default.

The Jan. 26 event marked Senior Night for the River program. Pirate greybeards Karar, Konet, Maloney, Owen Patton, and Rees Vaughan were honored in a pre-match salute.

On Feb. 2, Rocky River tangled with Valley Forge in a GLC crossover match. The Pirates defeated the Patriots 48-18. Dylan Heffron, Maloney, Konet, and Karar all registered pins on the night.

Then it was on to the GLC Championships, held Feb. 11 at Westlake High School. Paced by a win at 215 pounds (Konet), a third, and two fourths, Rocky River scored 60.5 points and placed eighth in a field of 12 teams at the circuit's title meet.

Konet clocked two pins and a decision in going 3-0 to win gold at 215. Maloney went 3-1 to take bronze at 138. Connor Schiefferle placed fourth at 150; Zane Lindquist did likewise at 175.

Aidan Konet -- owner of an 18-2 record this season -- has medaled in back-to-back GLC tournaments (third at 190 in 2022).

Rocky River has entries in nine weight classes for Saturday's sectional tournament. Wrestling is slated to begin at 10 a.m. The top four placers in each class will advance to the district level.
