RRMS Power of the Pen Teams Win District Tournament

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Rocky River Middle School 7th and 8th grade Power of the Pen teams placed first out of 18 schools at the District tournament on February 4 at St. Raphael. At the tournament, writers had three 40-minute blocks of time to write three stories or personal narratives in response to specific creative writing prompts.

 

Seventh grade team members include Abigail Lewis, Sophia McConville, Arina Mollaeian, Mattia Sturman, Mallory Tracey and Alex Wiggers. Eighth grade team members are Avery Barta, Eliza Foster, Delaney Keaton, Caitlyn Lewis, Rieace Liston-Noble, and Samantha Welsh.

 

Power of the Pen gives special recognition to the top-12 writers in each grade at the district tournament and RRMS had several individuals who received honors. At the 7th grade level, Tracey earned first place, Sturman placed eighth and McConville was 12th overall. Liston-Noble finished in 5th place and Foster was in 6th place among the 8th graders.

 

Many of the 7th and 8th grade team members qualified to compete at the regional tournament slated for March 11 at Baldwin-Wallace University.

 

Power of the Pen is the leading interscholastic program in written expression for 7th and 8th graders in Ohio. The organization’s mission is to empower young people to find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own by engaging students in interscholastic writing tournaments and providing a platform for publication.
