ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Gregg Troy, a former U.S. Olympic swim coach, visited Rocky River High School last week to provide an Olympic experience to RRHS students and members of the swimming and diving team. The visit was part of a grant funded by the Rocky River Education Foundation, the Rocky River Aquatics Foundation and the Lake Shore Swim Club.
Troy is the only coach in history to be an Olympic head coach (London, 2012), an NCAA Division I championship coach (University of Florida), a national champion club coach and a high school state champion coach. Troy was inducted into the American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2012 after mentoring more than 75 Olympians and 250 All-Americans.
During his time at RRHS, Troy shared his experiences, advice and instruction with RRHS students. He presented to all RRHS Fitness 101 classes about topics including water safety, the importance of floating and how heart rate applies to fitness in the pool. In addition, he provided presentations/swim clinics to the RRHS swim team, leading the team through drills and techniques. He also talked about nutrition, motivation, culture and goal setting.
In addition, Troy spent time with members of the Lake Shore Swim Club, which includes students from Rocky River Middle School and Kensington Intermediate School. He conducted several drills and games with this group and addressed how to swim all four strokes correctly (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly).
Mark Harris, RRMS fitness/health teacher and RRHS head swim coach, applied for the grant.
