ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Alex Sheen, the founder of because I said I would, a social movement and nonprofit that is dedicated to the betterment of humanity through promises made and promises kept, visited Rocky River High School and Rocky River Middle School students on Monday, September 16.

The visit was made possible through a grant from the Rocky River Education Foundation.

Sheen spoke with RRHS juniors and seniors at a morning assembly and presented to RRMS students in the afternoon. He also had a 30-minute meet and greet and Q&A session with a select group of students at each school after each assembly.

Sheen shared several stories at the assemblies about how making and keeping a promise has made a difference in the world. At the end of his presentation, each student received 10 promise cards of their own and RRMS has displayed a promise banner to post their cards as a daily reminder of the assembly message. 

The promise cards are the size of business cards and blank except for the words “because I said I would” across the bottom and people are asked to write their promises in the blank space.

“We hope that students and staff will use the messages from Alex’s presentation and promise card activity to serve as a vivid reminder of the commitments and promises we have made to ourselves and motivate us to persevere through difficult and challenging situations,” RRMS Principal Megan Rose said.

Since its founding in September of 2012, because I said I would has distributed more than 11.4 million promise cards to 154 countries. The because I said I would offices are headquartered in Rocky River, Ohio.
