Downed in a dual

AVON LAKE, Ohio – The Pirates dropped their first dual event of the season, losing to Avon Lake, 314-316, on Tuesday.

After four large-field tournaments to start the season, Rocky River clanked swords with the Shoremen in a match on their home turf at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar Golf Club. The match format brought out the best in the Pirates – three players (Ethan Mylett 76, Will Bennett 78, Carlo Fricano 78) carded season-best scores in the two-stroke loss.

“I saw a lot of positives today,” said Head Coach David Hendrickson. “We’ll take those and move forward.”

Avon Lake’s Tyler Madden loomed large in the final result at Legacy. Madden fired a front-nine 33 en route to a medalist 74.

CANNON FIRE …

BACK TO THE 70s: Carlo Fricano’s 78 marked his team-leading third round under 80 this season. Fricano logged a 78 at Pine Hills on Aug. 5 and a 79 at Shale Creek on Aug. 7.

JV DROPPED BY TWO: Tuesday’s JV match was a home-course doppleganger of the two-stroke loss suffered by the varsity. Avon Lake topped River, 171-173, in a nine-hole match at Big Met. Aidan McDonald carded a team-best 39.
