Rocky River Teams Claim 4 State Qualifiers in National History Day Competition
Rocky River High School and Middle School teams came away with four state qualifying entries in the National History Day Competition-Region 3.

The Ohio Region 3 contest – which includes Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Summit counties – was held March 3 at the Cleveland History Center.  The National History Day Contest encourages students to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice. This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”

RRHS entered 13 exhibits, three websites and two papers from 44 students. Two RRMS students entered a group exhibit.

State qualifiers in the Senior Division for grades 9-12 include a Paris Peace Conference Exhibit from juniors Ryan Boettcher, Jaret Boettcher, Thomas Krizman and Dylan Smith, Honorable Mention; Apollo Soyuz Historical Paper from junior Liam Smyth, 2nd place; and a Cuban Missile Crisis Website from seniors Teagan Smith and Grayson Newson, 3rd place.

The middle school team of sixth graders Anna Mural and Ellie Harkins took a Best of School Honorable Mention in the Junior Division for grades 6-8 for their Jefferson vs. Hamilton Exhibit.

RRHS juniors Charlotte Weixel and Raygan Murray earned a Special Prize for their Jewish History submission on the Nuremberg Trials.

The state contest will be held April 21 at Ohio Wesleyan University. The top two entries in each category at the state level are invited to the 2018 National Contest in June at the University of Maryland, College Park.
